ages wise in the ways of the elemental arts claim that the powers of earth, water, air, and fire throughout the world are all powered by a single hidden mystical place—a chamber, or perhaps a set of chambers, wherein the spiritual archetypes of those four elements reside and grant power from their own essence to all other elemental beings and to all mortals who call upon elemental magic. Over time, so the sages claim, a city of lesser elemental beings has sprung up around this mystical focus, for the elementals draw greater strength from closer proximity to their archetypes. No mortal explorer who has seen the Elemental City and survived will speak of it, but the wisest sages are sure that it is shaped and hewn much like the cities of mortals, with streets and dwellings, citizens and guards—except that all its citizens are magical beings.
