Mud stands for Multi User Dungeon—a multi-player, interactive game where each player, a person in real life, takes on the role of a character, a denizen of the world in which the Mud is set. Some Muds might be set on contemporary Earth, while others are set in the far future or past, or in fantasy or science fiction settings on other worlds altogether. Depending on the Mud, a character might be a human, elf, dwarf, or other fantasy being, or an alien of some kind from a science fiction setting. This is the character's race. He might be a mighty warrior, a gifted magician, a devious and crafty thief, a starship pilot, a trader, or any one of many other possible careers. On most Muds these career choices are known as classes.

Many Muds are combat-oriented: places where players may log on their characters to hunt and kill automated denizens of the game world (often called mobiles, or mobs) and/or each other, for reward in the form of treasure or experience. Other Muds are more socially or roleplay oriented, with combat—if it even exists at all—taking a back seat to character interaction. Certain Muds combine both elements, combat and character interaction, together. Mozart Mud is primarily combat-oriented, but also includes roleplay options, both freeform and in the more structured setting of quests.
