The player characters of Mozart Mud can be divided into three main categories: immortals, avatars, and mortals. Immortals, or gods, are those beings who administer the game, create areas, write code, handle quests, maintain this website, and deal with all the other administrative tasks of running the Mud. Mortals are the bulk of the players: ordinary characters of levels 1 through 99. Avatars are the powerful mortals of levels 100 to 110, who have completed the Avatar Challenge and gruelling tests to achieve their levels and power, but are still players of the game, not administrators like the immortals. With great power comes responsibility to use it, and avatars are particularly encouraged to help others, especially newcomers and low-level characters.

Avatars are shown on the who list by their level title rather than a numeric level. These titles show the relative power of an avatar, as they gain new abilities at each level.

Immortals are likewise shown by their level titles. They too receive additional abilities with each immortal level, but these are commands, of a world-editing or an administrative nature, rather than skills, spells, or other abilities useful in killing monsters and playing the game.

It is important to note that a single player may have more than one character, including characters of different types. However, it is illegal for one of a player's characters to benefit from another in any way, whether from having more than one character logged in at a time (known as multiplaying), or from transferring gold or equipment from one of your characters to another.
